Nepal Flood Emergency: Help Rebuild

JM Jay Mj is raising money for Nepal Flash Flood: Emergency Relief Verified

My story

On 26 August 2026, a catastrophic flash flood tore through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river areas of Nepal. Communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading were hit by water, mud, rock and debris. Homes disappeared. Roads and bridges were destroyed. Hydropower facilities, water systems and telecommunications networks were badly damaged.

The scale of the loss is still emerging. In its latest published situation update, issued at 14:00 NPT on 10 September, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 1,377 bodies had been recovered, 5,130 people remained missing and 13,656 people had been rescued. Reuters subsequently reported on 13 September that the number of confirmed deaths had risen to 1,386. These figures may continue to change as search and identification efforts proceed.

Current reporting and preliminary scientific analysis indicate that a high-elevation slope failure involving rock and glacier ice near the Nepal-China border developed into a destructive flow of water, mud and debris. The exact initiation mechanism and sequence of contributing factors remain under investigation.

This is first and foremost a human tragedy. It is also a painful example of how quickly a natural hazard can become a wider emergency when transport, power, communications, water and healthcare are damaged together.

Yet within the devastation, one story from a school in Nuwakot offers a powerful lesson. Preparedness does not always begin with sophisticated technology. Sometimes it begins with a warning, a clear decision and the willingness to act before every fact is known.
