HISTORY
We started with some basic provisions
In 1998 Brooklands library was purchased from Bury council and converted into a Masjid. For more than 25 years Masjid Bilal has been running in this old Library building, with some temporary extensions. This has been a place of prayer, learning and belonging for Muslim families in Prestwich and Bury South. It has helped children learn their faith, brought people together in worship, and supported the community through some of life's most important moments.
Why We Need to Build?
A growing community can no longer be served by a building that has reached its limits.
The need is now greater than ever.
As the community continues growing and demands from the madrassa keep rising, the current building no longer provides the space or facilities our families need. Initially, we had secured temporary permission to expand the existing masjid but this was only for a limited period with temporary buildings, which has since expired.
Children need safe, dedicated classrooms, worshippers need room to pray and our growing revert community need their own space to support each other. Families also need proper support and access to essential services close to their homes.
The planned new Masjid is more than just a building
If we do not act now, the loss of the temporary space coupled with increasing demands will leave the masjid with even less capacity at a time when the need is higher than ever especially in this climate of hostility against the Muslim community. This project will create a place where faith is taught, hearts are connected to the masjid, and future generations can grow up with Islam at the centre of their lives.
Vision for the Future
A new three-storey masjid has been approved — now we need your help to build it.
Alhamdulillah, the planning permission has been granted for a purpose-built masjid that will serve our community for decades to come.
The new masjid building will provide dedicated prayer areas for males and females, youth and elderly provisions, a dedicated place for our revert community, madrassa classrooms, community space, a community library, improved accessibility, and essential funeral facilities.
A project of this scale will be delivered in phases.
The overall development includes land purchase, relocation works, design, approvals and construction, with a total estimated cost of £4.8m. To ensure transparency and best value, the organisation is also in the process of becoming a registered Charity.
Why do we have to deliver it in phases?
The Masjid currently serves an estimated Muslim population of approximately 8,000 residents within a six-mile radius in Bury South, and therefore provides an essential community and faith service to the local area. It is consequently critical that continuity of service provision is maintained throughout the construction period.
To facilitate this, the development will be delivered in two phases. Phase One will involve the partial demolition of the existing Masjid to enable construction of the first section of the new building. During this transitional period, a partial temporary relocation to an interim facility will also be required in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all attendees while maintaining ongoing religious and community activities. Alhamdullilah, with Qarzi Hasanah, we purchased a detached property within a two-minute walk of the present masjid, which serve as a temporary location during the construction phase. The time to repay the Qarzi Hasanah has now matured.
How is the project being delivered?
To ensure professional and efficient delivery, the Masjid has established a construction committee to govern this project. This group is made up of the management members and local attendees who are qualified and experienced Civil Engineers and Architects.
